OUGD103 End of module evaluation

Through this module I have developed skills with hand drawn type, practicing drawing in a variety of different style. I think I have developed a kind of style more through this module. I believe with each module we have been introduced to new workshops and new ways of working and from this I have been able to work with In-Design, I really enjoyed getting to know how this works and applying the knowledge we gained to the type and grid brief and the Indesign brief. This is something I would like to develop further into the second year and improve on.

In terms of research I think I could have done more and possibly focused too much on the development for the Speaking from experience brief. For the Communication is a virus brief, we created questionnaires to ask a range of people and we also did quite a lot of secondary research in order to support the content of the project like the booklet etc. I found with the Vogue brief looking at other posters helped but within a week I found that I focused more on the designing of the end product which may not be the best approach to it.

My strengths through this module include blogging, I think I have tried to keep on top of my blog documenting often rather than leaving it all to the last minute. Also keeping a project file has meant I tried to stick to time management and had a plan of what I was doing. Another strength may be drawing out ideas by hand first of all rather than taking it straight a computer.

My weaknesses include standard of crafting, I think this has really let down the over all look of some work and needs to be improved to create a more professional finish. Also another weakness could be sticking to my comfort zone in terms of style and what I know, I haven't really tried anything I wouldn't normally use in terms of software etc apart from the things we have been introduced to. One thing which needs to be improved is my contribution to crits and feedback and speaking in front of groups of people something which will hopefully be improved from the PPD presentation.

Five things that I would do differently next time are, try something new or that I want to do but haven't yet. Contribution to crits needs to be improved. I would ensure that I research thoroughly no matter how short the project is to help my development. I would also try and produce a greater amount of work for a project to ensure I have fulfilled the brief as much as possible. Lastly something I would do differently would is not spend so much time on something if I am stuck for ideas I would seek help immediately to develop my ideas.

Grading myself:
Attendance- 5
Punctuality-5
Motivation- 4
Commitment-4
Quantity of work produced-3
Quality of work produced-3
Contribution to the group-2

Speaking from experience- self evaluation

What problem did you identify?

My problem was things that students have learned this year since moving away to uni.

What evidence did you find to support your decisions?

I asked members of the current first year things that they had learnt this year whether it to be about the course of their flat or whatever.

What methods did you use togather your evidence and what forms did it take?

My primary research consisted if a couple basic questionnaires which turned into lists of quotes once finished. I also used my own knowledge and the internet for secondary research to look at existing freshers products and things you gather on your first week of uni.

What methods of research did you find useful and why?
I found the primary research most useful as this turnedout to be the content of my project. Using specific quotes that I gathered which were light heartered and maybe informative was my aim from this.

How did these inform your response to your problem?

With the secondary reseach I looked at already exists out there for freshers and so wanted to go down this route but make it my own, like the pack. The primary research allowed me to create specific products from the quotes that would hopefully infrom new students of things they may face and come across ina light hearted way.

What research could you have carried out that would have proved more useful?

I could maybe have carried out further research to see if people would use/ look at this package/box that I made. Also further research to see if other students on the course agreed with the quotes and statement I was using. Further research into packaging etc would have benefitted my crafting most likely.

5 things you have learnt about the design process?

Crafting is not always easy

The importance of time management and sticking to it

Research into existing products to adapt or make your own, use what already exists

I've learned different products I can make, stickers for example

The content is driven by the audience

5 things you would do differently?

More in depth research into packaging

Maybe produce something more useful to the students

Give myselfmore time for production of the products

I struggled in the second week with coming up with products I wanted to make so next time I should ensure I make a decision faster, reseach, ask for advice as soon as posssible

Speaking from experience- Things to do

Things I need to do before printing tomorrow:
  • Stickers- perfect outlines, fill colours etc
  • Put circles on cheese box, brightenthe orange
  • Do the packaging design
  • Re-size ear plug package, alter the circles on the design
  • Redo envelope- sides need to be longer
  • Make the postcard bigger, perhaps lighten the colour of it

Speaking from experience- Progress Crit

Feedback
  • Lots of research on type
  • Need more research on packaging-look at more styles
  • Could look into different stock and practise with them
  • Developed work well, although designs have been manipulated they still look hand drawn and have a personal touch.
  • Need more research in general, where are the quotes from?
  • Quotes and products perfect for the considered audience.
  • Perhaps a blank postcard you send home which they could send back.
  • Research- artists, inspiration

Speaking from experience- Tutorial with John

After explaining my ideas to John the points he made and suggestions he came up with were:
  • Produce an envelope/ box for the postcards to sit in
  • Distribution- could go in the portfolios at the start of the year
  • Sticker on the portfolio to let them know it's there?
  • Net of money box can be any size, just fold it up into the pack, don't restrict the size
  • Bigger postcards.
